I just hit 60,000 miles on my 2012 Kia Optima EX 2.4L and could use some advice. I’ve been reading the manual, but it’s a little confusing. I live in Southern California, and apparently, it’s considered a “severe” environment for cars. This is my first car, and I want to take good care of it. So far, I’ve only done oil changes and tire rotations every 6,000 miles. The car runs smoothly, and I’m still under the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Here are my questions:
The manual says to change the oil every 7,500 miles (or every 3,750 miles in severe conditions). I’ve been doing it every 6,000 with regular 5W-20 oil, and the dealer said this is fine. Is this schedule okay, or should I adjust it?
The dealer told me to change the coolant at 60,000 miles, but the manual says 120,000. My coolant looks fine. When do most people usually replace it? Also, what’s a good price for a flush? I’ve been quoted anywhere from $90 to $160.
The dealer also said to change the transmission fluid at 50,000 miles, but the manual doesn’t mention it. Some forums say it’s not necessary because it’s sealed. Does anyone know the right mileage for this? I was quoted $120 to $190 for this service.
They suggested flushing the brake fluid, but it’s not in the manual either. Is it really needed? They quoted $130 for this.
The serpentine belt looks fine to me. How often should I replace spark plugs? The manual says 105,000 miles, but I’ve seen people recommending every 15,000. Can I change them myself, and is it worth it?
Any other maintenance tips would be appreciated! I’ve looked online and on forums but can’t find clear answers. Thanks so much for any help.
First off, make sure you’re up to date with engine recalls. There have been issues with the Hyundai/Kia 2.4L engines. As for “severe” conditions, if you’re driving on this planet, it probably qualifies.
Changing oil every 6,000 miles with regular oil might be pushing it. I’d suggest switching to synthetic or a blend if you’re going that long. Stick with 5W-20 as the manual suggests.
Coolant intervals depend on the car and coolant type. 120,000 miles sounds high to me. If it’s still clean, you’re probably okay, but many people do it between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Did you check the level or the condition of the fluid itself?
There’s no such thing as “lifetime” transmission fluid. Even sealed systems need maintenance eventually. Dealers usually suggest 50,000 miles, which might be early, but better safe than sorry. They don’t need to tear down the engine for this—just a drain plug. The quoted price seems normal.
Brake fluid does absorb moisture over time, so flushing it every few years is a good idea. I’d do it if it hasn’t been done yet.
Spark plugs should be good until 100,000 miles. Changing them every 15,000 miles is overkill unless you’re driving under extreme conditions. On a four-cylinder engine, it’s usually an easy DIY job. Just be careful not to damage the threads when reinstalling them.
@Alexis
Thanks for the advice. I’ll start changing the oil every 4,000 miles. The mechanic said the coolant still looks clean. Do you think 100,000 miles is a good time to do the transmission fluid, or should it be earlier? What about brake fluid?
5W-20 synthetic blend should be fine unless the weather where you live is extremely hot. Then you might consider 5W-30.
You can also check your dealership’s maintenance guide online for your car. Some quick things to look at include the cabin filter, which is easy to check and replace yourself if needed. Here’s a general list of items to check at 60,000 miles:
Change engine oil and filter
Rotate tires and check wear
Check air and cabin filters
Inspect brakes, belts, and hoses
Look over the suspension and steering components
I’d also inspect the brake fluid. If it looks dark or dirty, consider replacing it.
@Bliss
Thanks for the detailed list! I’ll check the cabin filter and go through the items you mentioned. I’ve been struggling to find a clear maintenance guide, so this helps a lot.
