How good are Kia Optimas for the long run?

I bought a 2013 Kia Optima LX a couple of years ago with 47,000 miles on it. I think I paid around $11,000 for it. I chose it over the Accord at the time. Now, two years later, I’m at 97,000 miles. I take good care of it with oil changes every 3,000 miles, and I recently took care of all the recalls. They even replaced the engine for free at 93,000 miles. It’s been running great so far, but I was wondering how long these cars usually last. Has anyone here taken theirs over 100,000 miles? Have you run into any issues? Mine’s been perfect so far, apart from some messed-up paint on the front. Let me know your experiences!

I bought my 2011 for $8,500, and it had around 72,000 miles. It’s been running well so far, but I’ve had to replace a few parts over the years.

That’s a good deal! What parts did you have to replace?

I had a 2010 Optima that got totaled at 167,000 miles because of someone else’s bad driving. The only things I replaced on it were a sensor and some engine mounts. It was a solid car!

I have a 2015 Optima LX with only 38,000 miles. In one year, I’ve dealt with wiring problems, random RPM spikes, radio issues, a broken trunk latch, and now the AC isn’t working. I’ve had enough of this car and plan to trade it in soon.

I own a 2011 with 110,000 miles and no big issues yet. I know the engine might fail someday, but it’s covered under the recall, so I’m not worried. The ball joints may need replacing soon, and I’ve heard about tie rod problems and AC hose leaks on these cars, but nothing major for me so far.

@Aldrin
How is the engine covered under the recall? I just bought a 2011 six-speed.

Mine is a six-speed manual too. All Optimas, except the hybrid, are included in the recall, even the ones made in Korea.

@Aldrin
Why aren’t the hybrids covered under the recall?

It’s probably because hybrid engines are so different from regular ones that the issue doesn’t apply to them.

@Aldrin
Is the recall still valid if you buy the car from a used car dealer?

Yes, I bought mine from a small used car dealer with 86,000 miles on it. The recall doesn’t have a mileage limit.

@Aldrin
Do all trims qualify for the recall?

Every trim is covered, except for the hybrids.

Which engine has the most problems?

Both the 2.4L and 2.0T engines are part of the recall, but I’ve seen more turbo engines being replaced than the 2.4L ones.

You got a 2013 for $11,000? That’s a great deal! I bought mine last year for $14,000 with 65,000 miles. Granted, mine’s an SXL trim.

Mine’s just the LX trim lol.

My brother has a 2014 with the 2.4L engine. He’s at 225,000 km, and it still runs perfectly. It even gets great gas mileage. Do we get different versions here in Canada?

The ones in Canada are made in South Korea. We also have an EX luxury trim that’s not available in the U.S.
